Moving Can Be Stressful. Here are Some Tips to Help

Moving into a new home is exciting, but the actual move itself? That can be stressful. Between the packing, loading, unloading and unpacking, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. But moving doesn’t have to be stressful. Planning ahead and staying organized can help. Here are some tips to make your next move less stressful.

Prepare Early On

There’s more to moving than just packing up and saying goodbye. Preparing for these extra things early on can help make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Get Your Utilities Sorted Out

When you arrive at your new home or apartment, you want all of your utilities to be up and running. Let your current utilities providers know that you will be moving. If you’re going to be using the same providers at your new home, the switch should be simple and straightforward.

If you’re going to be working with new utility companies, call them early on to arrange utility hook-ups.

Take care of this simple task as soon as you know your new address.

Set a Budget for Your Move

Moving can be expensive. Set a budget and stick to it so that if unexpected costs arise, you don’t find yourself with empty pockets.

Use an online moving cost calculator to estimate your costs, or get in touch with a mover to get a few quotes.

Find a Mover

If you plan on hiring professional movers, start looking early on. Some movers are booked up weeks in advance. Doing your comparison shopping early on ensures that you can choose the company that offers the best service and not just the only company with availability.

Arrange Donation Pick-Ups

Plan to get rid of furniture and other items? Arrange for donation pick-ups so that you’re not scrambling to get this job done at the last minute.

Scheduling a pick-up ahead of time will give the organization time to pick up your items.

These are some of the most important things you can do to prepare for your move. The more prepared you are, the less stressful your move will be.

Stock Up on Packing Supplies

Make sure that you have all of the packing supplies you need, and buy them early on. The last thing you want is to run out of boxes or bubble wrap the day before you move.

Make sure that you have enough:

·         Packing tape

·         Plastic wrap

·         Bubble wrap

·         Corrugated cardboard

·         Newspaper

·         Packing paper

When packing fragile items, like dishes and glassware, it’s important to have ample padding to protect them during transit. Stock up on these crucial supplies to make sure that you can pack these breakables properly.

Start Packing Early On

Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Get started early and begin with items that you won’t need anytime soon.

If you really want to be diligent, set a timer for an hour each day and use that time for packing. This will help make the process less stressful.

To keep things organized, try using a different color label for each room. This will make it easier and quicker for movers to place your items where they need to go.

One final tip: Have a game plan for moving day. Give everyone a job. Have someone direct the movers and designate someone to be in charge of moving items first or last. Having a plan will make the move less stressful and help the movers get their job done more quickly.
